McSweeney’s List (8 March, 2023)

A weird thing happened last week. I met some strangers who didn't catch my name, so I smiled and said:

"Dawn, like the sunrise", accompanied by a grand and unnecessary overhead arm motion to indicate the rising of a giant sun. I do enjoy my name…

One stranger responded, "It's from dusk till dawn. It's evening. Sunset. You don't even know what your name means."

My partner in crime had nowhere to look, rolling his eyes at the floor so hard the hardwood got dizzy. I'll assume there was some anticipation on his part; a breath held, waiting for the bomb to drop kinda moment.

I didn't pop off at this ignorant cow, though. Yes, I am saying I deserve accolades for the restraint. Instead, I tilted my head, smiled a little, and just let it slide. There before me stood a woman with an arrogance reserved for the chronically wrong and perpetually unchecked, with the tone of someone far too comfortable in conflict. I didn't want to teach her anything. (As if that were even possible.)

Later I regretted not making mention of it at least (or a whole theatrical scene at most). At heart, I'm a Petty Betty, and enjoy saying my piece. Though lately, I find myself spending more energy on the people and things I love, so why try to teach a pig piano? It bothers the pig, and mucks up your piano.

Spend your energy wisely. Keep your head high AF. Listen to your gut.

Does Death like Cotton Candy?

I read Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 (no one even made me), and I enjoyed it. Based on that, I'd bet the stage version of his Something Wicked This Way Comes is a good time. Wiki says it's a dark comedy about overcoming fear, and Death's there too, as a character in a travelling carnival (of course..?). Personally, I'd save the edibles till after the show.

Something Wicked

TIL

Another event at The Diving Bell Social Club! I've never been, but everyone tells me it's great, and I simply must go. Conveniently, I took a sneak peek at Harper Ladd's upcoming feature for our MTL Venue Series, and that's how I learned about Bring Your Own Band.

Four fab Montreal bands have been carefully selected for your entertainment. They'll play short sets of their best songs, the audience will vote (they've got a bracket system), and the winning band gets all the door money! How cool is that?!

BLING!

Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of decorative arts while being the most widely embraced eye candy. This exhibit offers a glimpse into the rich Islamic artistic tradition of jewellery making, rooted in pre-Islamic and local artistic traditions (Pharaonic, Greek, Byzantine, etc.), showcasing pieces serving multiple purposes (think protective amulets, symbols of social standing, etc.). It's design, history, art, and culture.

Adornment

WHERE: 3485 McTavish Street, Montreal, H3A 0E1

WHEN: Open now, through August 31, 2023
