McSweeney’s List (12 March 2025)

The mantra of the moment is We only take criticism from those we would take advice from.

Ok, the meme is written in the negative: don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from, but the brain loves a positive message, and it raises the vibes.

Regardless, let's consider it.

A friend recently told me that when he posts cranky or angry things, strangers slide into his DMs, and tell him shit like keep your head down; just smile and wave. That's a real message from a stranger! Is this what happens when women post opinions, he asked, and it’s a fair question. Social media is rife with trolls of all sorts, and the misogyny is palpable (and the feminism largely virtue signalling). It makes the immediate karma even more delectable; women posting facts, men trying to override them, and the women explaining that they do in fact have a PhD on the subject. *Chef's kiss*, put it in my veins. Nonetheless, my online experience is more mundane. Certainly no one has told me to fucking smile and wave; I would remember, and they certainly fucking well would too.

But who said this to him? Fucking nobody, that's who. Someone he doesn't know personally, who also isn't known publicly, someone who doesn't even have any known niche credibility. With the proof being consistently in the pudding, this particular pudding proved by their very existence that smiling and waving doesn't get you anywhere.

It's bigger than DMs, of course. We're all familiar with the person who says shady shit like I would never be brave enough to wear that, or well, I suppose that's one way to do it. Years ago, I pointed out a guy I thought was cute, and this chick goes I guess it makes sense; if you go for the less attractive men there's less competition. It was a fiercely bitchy thing to say, and I was steaming mad, but the irony wasn't lost on me: here was a perpetually frowning, ugly, globe shaped woman, whose personality could drive a man away sight unseen. She was bound to say something bitter, her face had already stuck that way. She was in no position to advise.

Over the years people have given me advice on jobs, and they fall into two categories: those who believe I should dedicate all my energy to a 9-to-5 regardless of what it is, and those who understand that I 9-to-5 in order to live, not the other way around. The former usually don't have side passions, and the latter are the ones who consistently get me job hookups. The former ask me how much comedy or writing pays me, and the latter come to my shows and read my shit. Despite the fact that I know who's career advice is more applicable to me, when the others add their two cents, I do feel bad. It's as though I'm not living up to an expectation, and maybe that's always uncomfortable.

Some things feel more clear cut. There's a very short list of people I’ll take writing advice from, because hey, I'm pretty good at this. It's my 10,000 Hour thing, and style preferences aside, I know what I'm doing. Now, obviously there are people I respect as equals or superiors, and those are the people I ask for guidance. When you're fresher at a thing, people feel more entitled to give you advice, but it shouldn't change the standard. For instance, just because I'm a relative newb in the comedy scene, doesn't mean I'll take just anyone's opinion as gospel. There are people who've been doing it longer than me who are less funny than me. In fact, that was a motivating factor in me taking the stage. And I'm not special; it's all a spectrum, and there will always be people better and worse than us in any given field.

That's the key: knowing that, how do we filter out the noise from the beneficial input? First, consider the source. Do they know about the subject at hand? I'm not qualified to speak on running a suburban household, but I am the local expert on having a healthy relationship with your adult offspring.

The other day, the aforementioned adult offspring told me I should do something (that probably definitely needed doing), and I asked, “When did you get to be the boss of me?” When I started slaying at life, she replied, without missing a beat. And, well, fair. Questions that require meticulous planning, math, Excel formulas, discipline, and the like, are her domain. I remain in charge of street smarts, spiritual and energy matters, the arts, and perspectives built on decades of lively living. (She would say that she intentionally avoids things that require street smarts, and eschews spiritual and energy matters, and is meh about the arts, I would offer that the decades of perspective contribute to those matters, so it remains to be seen.) Still, we don't criticize each other for our differences; they strengthen us, and allow us to tap into different expertise. And the places where we really differ, like style and music, we acknowledge that it isn't for us, but “it's so you”. Genuinely; no side eye, no subtext, just actually considering that you like apples and they like oranges, and that’s what makes us all a fruit salad! Trying to convince everyone to be a fucking apple, makes just apples. No one wants a world of just apples. With that simple point of view, we credit the things that separate us. This isn't for me, or my walk through life, but GAWD, it's perfect for you!

We could use a lot more of that; hearing it, and saying it. We could use a heavy dose of to each their own, but short of that, we have to remember how to filter out the bullshit from the valid criticism. And, how to offer helpful advice to all the different fruits (and veggies…hell, some pork chops are good people too. The cephalopods are tricky, but wise).

No, I'm not going to listen to a miserable person tell me how they made their first million. And for a minute, I'll probably feel like an asshole who should just do what this frowning person says. But I'd much rather learn how a happy person made enough money to be comfortable. I will not be taking fashion advice from people whose wardrobe puts me to sleep: unless they preface that advice with some sign that they know I'm an orange. (Strawberry? I'm probably a tomato, actually.)

And the next time you're thinking of sliding into a stranger's DMs to tell them how you’d do their thing differently, maybe just keep your head down, smile, wave, and let the moment pass.

Music For The Soul

El Balcón is more than a band; it’s a vibrant musical experience that invites you to dance, dream, and connect. This eclectic collective beautifully blends traditional music from around the globe with fresh, acoustic grooves, creating a sound that feels both timeless and boldly innovative. The band’s journey began with lead singer Valeria Del Marre’s deep connection to her Mexican roots. Drawing inspiration from traditional Mexican music, El Balcón started by reimagining beloved folk songs, breathing new life into classics with their signature style. But they didn’t stop there—soon, they were creating their own original compositions, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that’s entirely their own.

Their music is a sonic feast, featuring Mexican folk instruments like the jarana and tarima, paired with the mesmerizing microtonal melodies of the violin and oud. Anchoring it all is the upright bass, complemented by dynamic percussion, from the earthy beats of the cajón to the quirky charm of a donkey jawbone. The result? A genre-defying blend that’s as intriguing as it is irresistible. What really sets El Balcón apart, though, is their fiery, unforgettable live performances. Watching them on stage feels like being welcomed into a joyous family gathering. Their two lead singers bring an electrifying energy, infusing each performance with spontaneity—no two shows are ever the same.

With exciting tours planned across Europe and Mexico, El Balcón is hitting their stride. If you’re a fan of innovative, soul-stirring music that makes you want to move, laugh, and maybe shed a tear or two, don’t miss the chance to see them live. This is music that doesn’t just entertain—it connects.

El Balcon latest album, "El Errante", comes out tomorrow, but you can listen early right now!
