McSweeney’s List (25 September 2024)

We've all heard the term big fish in a small pond, or the alternative small fish in a big pond, but I wonder how much we really think about it. Okay, so in this analogy, we’re all fish. (For some reason there's no human saying for this.) We're special travelling fish that can pick up out of water, and just pop over from a pond to a lake, without consideration for biology or physics, but let's not get hung up on that. Some of us dig being the biggest, most respected fish in the water, even if it's a puddle, while others would be happy to wake up in the ocean, anonymous and ready to explore.

We do this in various aspects of our lives in differing ways, with each having its own distinct homeostasis. Socially, we start with the one-on-one play dates as toddlers, to elementary school, to high school, with each passing stage a very different pond. Thrust into the boundless work world, there are those who work best with a single boss in a small structure, and others who love starting as simply a number and rising up through the ranks. Real Estate folks often say buy the worst house on the best street for the best return on your investment, but some people just want a humble home far off the beaten path. And all of this becomes easier to navigate once you know what kind of fish you are, with the understanding that it can, and will, change.

In order to challenge ourselves, to keep evolving, we have to put ourselves in water (or rooms) we don't feel ready to be in. Whether it's an interview for something that seems ever-so-slightly out of your grasp, maybe bonding with new friends, or even trying a new hobby, it's bound to feel uncomfortable at first. I encourage you to get into those rooms, or waters, as often as possible, but we can’t discount those who try the ocean and head on back home to their favorite pond.

Infinite growth is impossible. Ask any economist or city planner. As much as we enjoy checking things off our list of accomplishments, we can't do it forever. We want to be the mayor, and then the president, then royalty, and soon Queen of All Things Everywhere. (Or maybe that’s just me?) We want a reliable car, then a sexy car, then a car so hard to find people will stop and take pictures with it. We want an outfit, but an expensive one…in fact, one that people will know is made just for me, by someone super famous, or something. You get the idea. If we aren’t able to find happiness where we are, we tend to get addicted to the dopamine hit of new acquisitions, be they material or titular, and often lose the plot.

We've all heard the stories of CEOs turned farmers, or jetsetters who traded their lifestyle for a yoga mat. That's not someone cracking under the pressure, that's someone following their heart to the water they belong to, and that's great. The folks who cultivate their small spot, making the most of what they have without straining for more, are satisfied. They've dropped out of the race, and into a place of contentment

“But every fish should at least try the ocean,” my Kiddo said when I discussed this metaphor-heavy essay with her. She says this as someone with a penchant for travel, and a long list of goals both achieved and yet-to-be-achieved. (And trust me, she will.) Trying the ocean is what she does best. I explained that the older I get, the more aware I am of where I want to expand, and where I'm a happy pond dweller. And both of us are right, of course.

Each ecosystem needs the right fish to thrive. But not every fish knows exactly where it needs to be. So explore your water. Choose your spot, and be the best you wherever you are, and no matter aspirations. Check out the oceans, take a tour of the rapids, whatever floats your boat.  Fish boat?  No, no, I made it this far without fucking the metaphor.  Just remember that whatever size you choose to be, in whatever water you feel comfortable, there is space for you there, and joy to be discovered.
