Open Air Laughs - Comedy in NDG Park

I don't want to evoke memories of those bleak times a few years ago when we couldn't gather and have fun, but that's where this story begins.

In 2021, a lot of comedians were feeling desperate to be behind the mic. After months of being sidelined by COVID restrictions, we were finally able to gather again, albeit with limitations. Indoor comedy shows had a strict capacity and social distancing had to be followed. Therefore, many places where we were used to performing were no longer suitable for hosting stand-up comedy shows.

Inspired by comics in other cities, and a group of French comedians here, Zak Kik (comedian and NDG resident), took the desire to perform into his own hands. He decided to rent a speaker and bring some comedians to a park.

He posted in the Thrive NDG community group on Facebook and put up posters around the neighborhood to promote this experiment.

I remember the first show very well. We were all so eager to see if people were going to show up. Many comedians were there to support and catch up. Did the show have an audience? It sure did. People showed up with their lawn chair, blankets and spirits - both in beverages and mood.

That summer, Zak's Saturday shows drew more people than any other comedy event in the city.

Years later, this event still regularly attracts NDG residents, and many from beyond the neighbourhood’s borders. With restrictions long gone, the great vibe of this show continues to draw crowds. On a beautiful Saturday evening in Girouard Park, up to 100 people can be seen showing up to enjoy the show. Zak chooses comedians thoughtfully, ensuring a different lineup each week to keep the show fresh for regular attendees.

Initially, he was hesitant to advertise too much, fearing he might be breaking some laws. The permits and regulations for these types of events are always so vague. However, true to the spirit of NDG and its art-loving community, this show has never encountered any issues.

This year he has worked with the NDG Community Council, which is a big step forward for this show. This collaboration will allow the event to make a bigger impact, reach more people through the council’s network, and improve the overall quality of the show.

So, come to NDG this Saturday at 8 pm. Bring a White Claw (or two), a friend (or two), and enjoy some laughs under the stars. Oh, also it's Pay What You Can!!! You can’t beat that.
