Where in Montreal are you located?
The Plateau
What do you love about that neighborhood?
As pragmatic as this is, I appreciate how convenient it is because the excitement of going to an aesthetically pleasing coffee shop fades once you realize how many 8$ lattes you have purchased. But between classes, work, and side hustles, I spend a lot of time in and around the Plateau, so my proximity to essential services (a 24-hour A&W) is a lifesaver.
What’s your favourite art space in Montreal and why?
For selfish reasons, NDQ and Theatre Sainte-Catherine. I started doing stand-up at NDQ and performed live sketch comedy for the first time at Theatre Sainte-Catherine. Both spaces are versatile yet intimate and deeply loved by their regulars. TSC also knows how to throw an afterparty.
Describe your art in your own words.
Confusing to my parents.
What have you been working on recently?
I started producing shows towards the end of last year, which has been a very fulfilling challenge. I work closely with Carmina Berbari, and together, we started Corporate Circus (@coprporatecircuspresents) last November. So far, our shows have taken a live podcast/late-night show format, but as young comedians, we're excited to experiment and see what brings out our funniest and most personable selves. I'm in a sketch comedy group (@mcgillbyoj), and Carmina is an actor, so we eventually want to incorporate a more theatrical element into our productions. Our next event is "Comedy For Gen Z Dummies: A Workshop" at Winterlude Comedy Festival, and it's on March 9th from 3-5 at Robin des Bois. Otherwise, I'm one of the new co-producers of The Poly Mic, which is returning its third season at NDQ on March 5th at 7:30. I'm also finishing my bachelor's degree.
What inspired you to get into stand up comedy?
Probably having unrestricted internet access at too young of an age.
What inspires your joke writing?
My inner-weird child, Vanessa Bayer's smile.
Who is your favourite comedian right now?
Cole Escola! I was lucky enough to see "Oh, Mary!" on Broadway in the summer, and it was a transformative experience. In Montreal, Becca Redden is one of the funniest people I know. The second she goes on stage, you know you're in good hands, and in stand-up comedy, that can feel so rare!
What is the best joke you’ve ever written?
Something about being horny around Remembrance Day because my love language is acts of service. Here's to hoping it gets better!
What’s your favorite Montreal room and why?
Anywhere with decent lighting at this point. I've only performed at a handful of venues, but in 2023 I saw JFL's New Faces at Le Balcon, which is inside of St. James United Church. I love the idea of a comedy show in a church because it's one of the last things you'd expect to see at a place like that.
